Q What is
the difference between a Standard and a Delineation Barrier?
Standard Rhino Barrier can be used in conjunction with the NCHRP 350 Impact
strips to be used where a TL2 is required or European needs where speeds do
not exceed 50mph with a working width of W8. The Standard Barrier has more
polyethylene used in its manufacture to meet these requirements.
Delineation barriers cannot be used in conjunction with the impact strips
to the above criteria but it is more suited to general construction, special
events, security. It is lighter as it uses less polyethylene in its manufacture.
Q What is the length of the barriers when connected
together and how many can I get in a 40' HC container?
The barriers are 2m or 6' 6" from pin to pin. If therefore you needed 100
linear metres of barrier you would need 50 units (300 linear feet would require
47 barriers). We can fit 76 Rhino Barriers into a 40' HC container (We ship
78 barriers in a 48' trailer or 102 in a 53' trailer).

Q What test levels
have the barriers passed and what speed levels can they be used for?
A The Rhino Barrier has been approved to NCHRP
350 TL2 and BS/EN1317 parts 1 & 2 to N1. The Rhino barrier has also had various
certifications for use by the Highways Agencies in both the US and UK and
additional various State approvals in the US. Which means that the speed limit
for the NCHRP 350 requirement is 45 mph/70kph. For UK and European standard
the speed limit is 50mph/80kph.
How easily can the barrier be moved with and without impact strips?
A When a barrier is empty it weighs only 55kg/120lbs
and so is easily handled by two operatives. With impact strips the weight
increases to 130kg/290lbs including all fittings but excluding water. If required
the barriers can be moved by forklift using the fork slots moulded into the
Q When the barrier is hit how
much deflection is there and how many barriers do I need?
A Our MIRA test showed a deflection of just under
4m using a 2 ton pick-up hitting at an angle of 25 degrees with a speed of
69.2 kph. There were various other tests using a UK car at a speed of 80 kph
to achieve BS/EN1317 Parts 1 & 2 to N1. The test criteria stipulated that
we use 34 Rhino barriers for the test.
What are the Donuts used for and are end caps necessary?
Donuts can be used to secure the barrier to the ground with the use of bolts,
providing a more permanent fixture if required. The donuts fit into the underside
of the barrier. The barrier is locked to the donut with the locking pin which
once turned through 90 degrees locks together. End caps provide a much more
aesthetically appealing appearance to a row of barriers but are not essential.
Q Can I store the barriers outside
when not in use and what happens if I lose a locking pin?
barriers can be stacked and stored outdoors. To stack the barriers simply
place three barriers tightly next to each other, turn the next barrier upside
down and place between to further barriers. Once you have five barriers together
start a second tier, stacking them across the first level of barriers. The
locking pins are manufactured so that they are semi-retractable. The only
way to remove them is by actually damaging the locking tabs on the lower end
of the pin. In the unlikely event you require a replacement pin they are available.
Q What makes the Rhino barrier better than other
barriers on the market?
A There are
three features that make Rhino barriers superior to other water filled barriers:
